RPGs that actually respect a small screen

Mobile RPGs have a thumb problem. Too many of them port a controller layout onto a touchscreen and leave you poking at buttons smaller than your fingertip. After reviewing a pile of them, I've got strong opinions about what works.

The best ones lean into turn-based or pause-driven combat. Ember of the Lost Vale is my current favorite for this. Its fights live on a small grid, you take your time, and nothing hides behind your hand mid-swing. That design choice alone makes it more playable than games with far bigger budgets.

Menus matter too. A good mobile RPG keeps your inventory shallow and your skill choices meaningful. I'd rather pick two abilities that matter than scroll through forty that don't.

If you're shopping for one, play the first half hour and ask yourself a simple question: did I ever lose a fight because the controls failed me, not because I made a bad call? If the answer is yes, put it down. Your thumbs deserve better.
